Abstract

This article examines the relationship between sustainable tourism and environmental protection, with particular attention to the development of tourism in Uzbekistan. The study aims to identify major environmental pressures associated with tourism growth and assess management approaches that can reduce adverse effects while supporting local economic and cultural benefits. A qualitative documentary method was applied to the supplied article and its cited institutional resources, including materials attributed to UN Tourism, the United Nations Environment Programme, UNESCO, the World Travel & Tourism Council, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The analysis identifies five interrelated areas of concern: transport-related emissions, water consumption, waste generation, biodiversity disturbance, and pressure on historic urban environments. It also identifies practical responses involving resource-efficient accommodation, visitor management, community participation, environmental regulation, and responsible business practices. Uzbekistan offers an illustrative context because historic destinations such as Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva combine growing tourism activity with the need to conserve built heritage and manage scarce resources. The findings are interpretive rather than the results of an original survey or environmental measurement. The article concludes that sustainable tourism requires coordinated policy, measurable environmental indicators, and meaningful participation by local residents.
