Abstract

International cooperation in the investigation of crimes plays a crucial role in ensuring justice in an era where criminal activity increasingly transcends national borders. This study examines the legal foundations, mechanisms, and challenges of Uzbekistan’s participation in international criminal cooperation. While existing literature highlights the global importance of extradition, mutual legal assistance, and information exchange, gaps remain in analyzing their application within the Uzbek legal framework. Using a doctrinal legal research method, the paper reviews constitutional provisions, the Criminal Procedure Code of Uzbekistan, bilateral and multilateral treaties, and practical cases of cooperation with foreign states. Findings show that Uzbekistan has developed a multi-layered system of legal instruments, ranging from national legislation to participation in key conventions (e.g., UN and CIS agreements) and membership in international organizations such as Interpol. Successful practices include large-scale extraditions and asset recovery cases under the UN Convention against Corruption. However, significant challenges persist, including procedural incompatibilities with foreign legal systems, human rights concerns in extradition, limited mechanisms for pre-trial asset confiscation, and bureaucratic delays. The results underscore the need for further harmonization of domestic laws with international standards, digitalization of cross-border legal communication, and institutional strengthening of central authorities responsible for cooperation. This has broad implications for enhancing Uzbekistan’s integration into the global legal order, improving the effectiveness of transnational crime investigations, and building trust with international partners.
